About Water Heater Elements
At PlumbersStock, you can save big on water heater elements. If long hot showers are your thing, then making sure that your water heater is always working is important. A water heater does exactly what the name suggests and heats up your home's water. One of the most critical water heater parts for this process is the heating element.
How Does a Water Heater Element Work?
Some water heaters consist of two elements. When there are two elements, they are strategically located (one at the top of the tank and another at the bottom of the tank). As water enters the tank, it is heated by the bottom element. As the water level in the tank rises, the water at the top of the tank gets further away from the heating element and requires more work to keep it the right temperature. The hot water heater element at the top of the tank relieves the bottom element from having to do all the work. Other water heaters have only one burner or element at the bottom of the tank, which heats the entire tank of water.
How to Replace a Water Heater Element
The first and most important step to replacing the element is to turn off the breaker or power supply to your water heater. After completing these steps, remove the access panel and insulation, and then check the wires to ensure there is no power to the water heater. Once it is confirmed that there is no power, then remove the wires from the heating element, and then the water needs to be shut off. The tank then needs to be drained by connecting a hose to the water heater and running it to a drain. Remove the old water heater element with the element wrench. You can then slide the replacement element in and tighten it. Install the wires on the new element. You can then replace the insulation and cover the unit. Each water heater may vary slightly in how the water heater element replacement fits in, so consult the manufacturer’s instructions.
Daily Uses for Hot Water
Before water heaters were invented, hot water was obviously still needed. Tasks such as dishes, cleaning, and even bathing required the manual heating of water. A water heater uses heating elements to heat and store hot water, providing it on demand.
